May 2026: Heat and power grids – why summer preparedness matters

In May 2026, electricity resilience became visible again. Investigations into the 2025 Iberian blackout continued, while early heatwaves showed how quickly local grids can come under strain.

A clear example was Turin. At the end of May, several districts suffered repeated power cuts. Public reports named an early heatwave, thermal stress on cables and ageing grid infrastructure. Traffic lights and traffic flows were also affected.

For households, the lesson is simple: preparedness is not panic. In May, check water, batteries, power banks, torch, hand-crank radio, cash, medicines and food that can be used without electricity.

During hot weather, the issue is not only light. It is also drinking water, cooling, medicine, communication and checking on older people, children and pets.
