Almost 14 hours without power: Ribagnac and nearby villages left in the dark

Almost 14 hours without electricity: A night-time fault unexpectedly disrupted Ribagnac and several communities in France’s Dordogne department on 11 July 2026. The first information gives 02:43 as the starting time. What may initially have appeared to be a local problem developed, according to the reports received, into an outage extending across an estimated radius of roughly 17 kilometres.

The French energy portal Selectra recorded a total of 95 outage reports. This figure must not be confused with 95 affected households, but it does show that the interruption reached well beyond a single building. Reports came from Ribagnac and, among other places, Cours-de-Pile, Saint-Capraise-de-Lalinde, Conne-de-Labarde, Lalinde, Prigonrieux, Saint-Germain-et-Mons and Saint-Nexans. A particularly large number of reports arrived between about 07:50 and 11:30. By then, the area had already been without normal power for several hours.

In rural areas, a prolonged power cut can quickly mean far more than dark rooms. Fridges and freezers gradually lose temperature, internet routers and card payments stop working, batteries run low, and electrically operated pumps or gates become unusable. There has been no official assessment of whether, or to what extent, these consequences actually occurred in the named communities. Even so, the duration made the incident a serious test for many residents. Mobile connections can also weaken during a long outage once backup power at individual sites runs out or large numbers of people try to call at the same time. Anyone relying solely on a smartphone may then be left without dependable information at precisely the wrong moment.

The exact cause has not yet been confirmed. Ribagnac lies in an area where the distribution network is operated by Enedis. Because the reports were spread across a wide geographical area, Selectra considers a fault on the public distribution network more likely than a problem inside one property. However, the user reports do not allow a reliable conclusion as to whether the cause was equipment failure, maintenance work or a brief weather-related event. Speculation would therefore be premature.

According to the available information, power was not restored until 16:25. The outage therefore lasted around 13 hours and 42 minutes. That was long enough to test household supplies, communication options and emergency equipment. The incident is another reminder of how suddenly even a geographically limited outage can completely disrupt everyday life.

For such situations, torches, charged power banks, a battery-powered radio and sufficient drinking water should be kept within easy reach. Fridge and freezer doors should remain closed as much as possible. Candles increase the risk of fire and are not ideal emergency lighting. Generators, barbecues and other fuel-burning devices must never be used indoors because they can produce deadly carbon monoxide. Sensitive electronics should be unplugged during the outage and reconnected only after the power has been stable for several minutes.

In France, an unplanned, continuous interruption lasting more than five hours may, under certain conditions, qualify for automatic compensation through the electricity bill. Those affected should document the start time, duration and location and then check their bill. The outage has now been resolved, but the night in Ribagnac leaves a clear warning: a blackout does not have to be nationwide to turn normal life upside down for many hours.
