It sounds like the opening scene of a disaster film, but it is a real warning from the energy sector: on June 30, 2026, the U.S. Department of Energy declared an emergency for the region served by PJM Interconnection. PJM operates the largest power grid in the United States and supplies large parts of the eastern U.S. The trigger was a heatwave that pushed electricity demand higher and placed reserves under pressure.

According to Reuters, the order is based on Section 202(c) of the Federal Power Act. This allows the government, in an exceptional situation, to authorise measures intended to protect the electricity supply. PJM had already warned on June 29 of an imminent reliability emergency. Peak loads of about 159,563 megawatts were expected for July 1, with around 162,860 megawatts projected for July 2. These are not abstract figures. They describe the kind of load created when air conditioners, data centers, households, traffic systems, hospitals and businesses all draw heavily from the grid at the same time.

What makes the situation especially serious is that, according to Reuters, the issue was not only temperatures near 95 degrees Fahrenheit, or about 35 degrees Celsius. The grid operator also pointed to limited generation capacity and possible restrictions on individual generating units due to environmental permits or state requirements. This is precisely the mix that can make power grids vulnerable: high demand, little room to maneuver, technical limits and almost no time to react.

For consumers, such a warning does not automatically mean the lights will go out. But it is a loud signal that modern power supply can reach its limits quickly. A grid must remain balanced every second. If demand rises sharply and reserve power becomes scarce, grid operators may have to use special measures. In the worst case, local outages, load shedding or targeted consumption reductions can be used before bigger damage occurs.

The uncomfortable lesson is simple: blackout preparedness does not begin when the power is already gone. It begins when authorities, grid operators or weather services issue warnings. Then panic helps no one. Practical preparation does. Fill water containers, charge phones, prepare power banks, plan cooling, inform neighbours and reduce unnecessary electricity use during peak hours.

The message from the U.S. shows once again that blackouts are not caused only by storms, cyberattacks or broken lines. Heat can also push a grid towards the edge, especially when millions of people need cooling at the same time. Anyone who ignores this is relying on a complex system to work perfectly at all times. That is not preparedness.
