Tip: How to handle a power outage during heavy rain and heat

When thunderstorms, flooded roads and heat come together, a local power outage can quickly become uncomfortable. These simple steps help households during the first hours.

A power outage after heavy rain is different from a short interruption on a normal day. Roads may be blocked, repair crews may need longer to reach damaged areas and the home can become hot at the same time.

Check safety first. Keep away from downed or hanging power lines, do not enter flooded basements and do not drive through water on the road. Report the outage to the utility if possible and follow official updates, a battery radio or mobile data while your phone still has power.

Open the fridge and freezer only briefly. In heat, close curtains, avoid physical strain, drink regularly and check children, older people and ill people. Generators, grills and camping stoves must never be used inside living rooms, garages or enclosed balconies.
